Current Music: Everything In It's Right Place - Radiohead
It's the left, in case you were wondering.

I was told to post this on my livejournal, so I am.

It is dedicated to Mr. Sammy, my lover boy in training.
(PS: Ignore the website stuff... I haven't done my works cited page yet!)

Radiohead

Though they are not popular worldwide, Radiohead is considered to be one of the most bold and most creative musical groups from their time. Their music is complex and unique, but can still be considered alternative rock. Despite their classification into a genre, they can hardly be considered mainstream; their lyrics, sound, and melody are unlike most mainstream bands that one may hear (website 1).

Members of the band met for the first time at Abingdon School, which was a boys only school near Oxford, England. It was there that they began to play together. Phil Selway, who later became the bands drummer, was the oldest of all of them. He was a year above the guitarist Ed O’ Brain and singer Thom Yorke. Colin Greenwood, bass player, was a year below these two, and his brother was two years below him.

Even though there was such an age difference, the group got a long well. They were inspired by many bands such as Joy Division, R.E.M., Elvis Costello and the Smiths (website 2). They practiced ever friday because it was the only time they could all get together. The finally decided to name their band On A Friday because it was the day they usually met. They played their first gig in August of 1986 (website 2) and continued to play gigs through their schooling there.

When it came time for college, they wanted to continue the band, but their parents wanted them to pursue college. All of the members did, and had graduated by 1991, except for Jonny. He stopped his course in psychology because by that time On A Friday had been signed for a record deal with EMI. They decided to changed their name due to criticism from critics, so it was named after the reggae song “Radio Head” from the Talking Heads’ True Story album.

Radiohead finally became popular in 1992 with “Creep”. They then released their first album, Pablo Honey in 1993, and followed it with The Bends in 1995. They continued to gain popularity in Britain during this time, with their third single “Fade Out” making it into the top five there. (website 3). “We had to put ourselves into an environment where we felt free to work...” commented Thom Yorke when he was asked about the success of this album (website 3).

They continued to to put themselves into free environments and soon produced a new album, OK Computer in 1997. Due to an increase in attention as their albums began to get better and even more unique, Radiohead went on a lot of tours world wide and were highly acclaimed. The fame was tiring the band out though, and they were on the verge of breaking up. Finally, a decision was made to take a year off, and luckily it brought the group back together. They began to play again and experiment with different styles.

This time around, the band tried to use less guitar work and go for a “minimalist” style (website 4). It took longer than any of their previous albums, but three and half years produced a Grammy Award winner for Best Alternative Album. Kid A is said to be the best of all of their albums. They followed it with Amnesiac, which used songs that they had recorded in the same session as Kid A.

Radiohead was able to take a faster approach to their next album. They toured in Portugal and Spain, and the songs for their new album came out during that time. By 2003 their 6th album was ready, Hail To the Thief. Though it did not receive the same praise, it was still greatly loved internationally (website 7). Radiohead set out on a tour which spanned the globe and brought them to new places like Japan and Australia.

After 20 years of making albums, touring, and creating a unique form of music, Radiohead is still together. They are continuing to record in a slightly less organized manner, and a new album is expected to be released after they try some of the new songs out on tour.

So this is depressing.
Some tech guy from my school wrote a response to our paper about an editorial I had written in last months paper about how Mac's are better than PC's. He basically took everything I said and turned it around and twisted it to make Mac's look like a piece of crap. Apparently Mrs. Dodson wants me to respond but I don't really feel like it.

Well, maybe I will, right now. Everyone has an opinion. One's opinion is changed by what kind of influences you grew up with. Take me for example. I have been using mac's all my life, so therefore I know how much better they are than PCs. Likewise, this tech guy probably grew up with or trained on PC's, so he thinks he knows how PC's are so much better than mac's. Because it is an editorial, it is opinion mixed with facts to back the statements. What this all boils down to: you have to take everyone's opinions with a grain of salt. People are influenced in different ways and have biased a opinion because of back round. Neither one may be completely true, and everyone stretches facts sometimes.

Response over.
The only reason I really got mad about this is because she's going to publish this letter. The stupid people at my school are going to read this and then suddenly I have no credibility. I'll be lucky if people ever trust any editorial I write ever again.
Sigh.

Maybe I'll just become the photo editor so I can Photoshop pictures and write news briefs for the rest of my journalism career.
I hate you Brett tech guy. I hate you and your stupid PC bias.

So during the many events that happend this past weekend....
My dad broke his arm, and he's getting a cast today.
And some random guy gave me his number. Holy Crap. I think I'm gonna freak out.
......
If you guys give me money I'll email him.
Haha. Just kidding!

I was watching Guts this morning, because I love watching the old time game shows. I find them hilarious. But when I flipped it on, this weird old game show was on that I'd never seen. It was called 'Finders Keepers", but it was definatly really old. Their prizes at the end consisted of converse, the orginal NES, and a portable black and white TV! Holy Crap! The cool thing is, that'd be a great prize package to have in these days too. Oh well, I thought it was interesting.

Current Music: Who Is It? - Bjork
Hi. So my time in Pittsburgh is almost terminated. I have like.. a week and a day left or something. Thus far I have meant a lot of Beckah's friends... Marcus Pastorious (however you spell it), Robbie K., Jon, Matt, Steph, and um.. other people not including Sam. I guess I got my hopes up to high when I thought I'd finally get to meet him.... sniffle.
Anyway... um... yeah. I've concluded that all of my sister's friends are guys who are tall and buff. Except Marcus doesn't count. Cause he's not tall and buff. So we'll say that 89.54% of Beckah's friends are tall and buff.
That's it. Later.

Hola! I'm here now I guess, and things are going alright. I'm really tired and it's only wednesday, which is kind of depressing. I'm really trying to make this entry interesting... really. Anyway, today's ventures included such things as ballet, jazz to Dave Matthews, yoga with Doug (haha... favortie Doug quote of the day, "If that's the highest you can get your back up, your arabesque must be pitiful!" That wasn't to me luckily), then modern (with Doug's wife?) which included things such as sitting on the floor for an hour and listening to a speech about nutrition, then a trip to CVS for gel. Phew. I guess this weekend's adventures will involve my family coming up for the forth of July. So nothing to exciting going on here. Although they would be more exciting if Someone who's name starts with an S and ends with AM would come to visit me... (although after such a poetic comment, who can complain?)

Okay I guess that's it.

Where is everyone today? I get back from a three day RDA experience, and no one is on to talk to me about it except my brother.

I guess my social life is pretty sad, given I'm at the dance studio 16.5 hours of my week. So, pretending I slept for oh, say, 7 hours a day, and I'm at school for 6, this brings my total amount of free time to 60.5 hours a week. And most of those hours are spent at home doing homework, or sitting in front of this computer waiting for someone to get online so I can talk to them. As I said, my social life is pretty sad.

I love dancing though, I'm not complaining. I had some amazing teachers this week/weekend, and saw some amazing performances. We also pulled out, if I do say so myself, an excellet performance of Threadsongs (Kirstens piece) with an understudy, because our beloved Lacey was throwing up. Alli did an amazing job, and I've used the word amazing three times in the last 30 secounds.

So I guess all this is really supposed to mean that even though I sacrifice my time, it's not really a sacrifice because I enjoy doing it. If that makes any sense at all. So even though I just spent .11 of my 60.5 hours writing this, it was a pretty good-willed and decent waste of time.
